4/26/16 - Louisville commit. Currently ranked No. 4 in the Wisconsin Class of 2016, and No. 85 in the PBR Overall ranks. 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-handed hitting third baseman with a strong frame. In the field has a strong arm with carry across the infield. Made a nice play on the backhand in game. Solid defender at third. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with good balance and strength thru contact. Took an 87 mph fastball right back up the middle for a single. 4.29 runner down the line on a 6-3 groundout.
2016 Super 60 - Louisville recruit. 6-foot-1, 205-pound frame, physical build, wide shoulders, developed lower half, strong forearms and hands. All-around strong showing at Super 60. Advanced defensive third baseman, soft, reliable hands, ranges well laterally, fundamental footwork. Strong, accurate arm, 88 mph across the infield; arm action is short and athletic, quick release, minimal effort involved. Offensively, hits from balanced setup, mechanically quiet, short stride, smooth load, short, level path, allows ball to travel deep, above-average bat speed, stays strong through the ball. Consistent line drives, gap-to-gap approach, works the middle of the field well, aggressive lower half, maintains balance through finish. Moves well for size, ran a 6.91 laser-timed 60.
2/9/14 - Louisville commit. 6-foot, 180-pound infielder, developed build, advanced strength for age. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, short stride, maintains excellent balance through contact. Bat path is short to the baseball, stays inside the ball, excellent contact point, gets extension. Advanced bat speed, gap to gap approach with some present power and more to come. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively has advanced actions, soft hands, with fluid, fundamentally sound footwork. Runs a 4.15 down the line. Arm action is athletic with plenty of strength to play the left side (83 mph), has carry and accuracy. Lavey is clearly one of the top prospects in the state as well as the region, and is currently ranked No. 1 in his class.
8-15-2018: Strong bodied third baseman who did not look like the Justin Lavey I’ve seen every year since his junior year in high school. Looked sluggish during my July visit to the Cape. Ran, threw and swung all with more effort than at anytime I had seen previously. Here’s what I wrote in The Scouting Trail: Week 4 “...showed an average arm during the game, plus in pregame. Below average range to his backhand, above average towards the 6-hole. He’s a better runner than he looks, above average underway. Also shows above average raw power, as the ball jumps off his bat in BP. I still believe he best profiles behind the plate where he has the hands, arm and feet to excel, and it would take some pressure off of his bat.” Regardless of his performance this summer, I’m still optimistic about Lavey as a prospect and see him as a later in Day Two talent and future pro backstop.
