Fast twitch actions on mound. Upper 80's velocity. Committed to U. of Iowa. Currently rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
5/3/19:Durable bodied at 6-foot-1, 220 pounds, McDonald ran his fastball up to 93 mph and sat 90-92 throughout his seven-inning start against UC-Irvine. He's a tough competitor with clean arm action who utilizes an over-the-top slot and leverages the ball downhill to both sides of the plate. His delivery/arm slot produces solid down angle, but not much wiggle to his fastball. Also mixed in a twelve-six 74-76 mph curveball, a fringy 82-85 slider and an 82-83 changeup. On this look the changeup flashed near average with arm side sink/fade, while the curve ball showed solid depth and spin, but lacked command and he used it as more of a show pitch. Although he did not show a true out pitch for the next level on this look, McDonald is having a strong season (5-3, 3.42 ERA, 71 IP, 68 H, 27 BB, 63 SO) as the Hawkeyes Friday night guy and could be considered as a budget saving senior late in Day Two.
