9/18/16- A riser in the IA 2018 class. Irvine continues to show ability on the mound. Sat low 80’s; touching 83 mph. Up and over delivery, Irvine shows steep downhill plane on fastball making it tough for hitters to elevate. Breaking ball has solid 12/6 shape and has a usable changeup. Typical of an SS/RHP; Irvine shows feel and command of zone with 3 pitches.
Summer 2020:Athletic with a quick arm, the 6-foot-3, 190 pounder works from an all stretch delivery to a high three-quarter release point. With above average effort in his delivery, his 91-92 mph fastball shows below average life. It spins in the 2200 range and can get real flat when up in the zone. His money pitch is a high spin (2600 rpm), hard curveball at 81-84 mph. It could use enhanced depth, but it’s already a better than average pitch that induces swing/miss. Another solid offspeed offering is his 83-85 mph sinking change-of-pace which flashes above average. The right-hander shows very good arm speed on the pitch with lower spin rates in the 1600-1700s. Overall,Irvinepossesses a starter’s arsenal with three distincts pitches and spin rates. However, his fastball command must be precise and he must move it around the zone while mixing his two better than average secondary offerings. Currently,Irvinehas struck out 38 batters, while allowing only nine walks and a 1.96 ERA in 23 IP this summer.
