3/06/20

South Carolina commit. Big, strong 6-foot-4, 205-pound left-handed pitcher, athletic, projectable build. One of the top left-handed arms in the country. Got our first look a few weeks ago at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament where he touched 94 with his fastball. Did not have the same type of velocity on this day, but had no trouble working his way through the Hiram lineup. Fastball sat 87-90, touching 91. Slider is a true out pitch, swing and miss type, 73-75, big sweeping action with late bite to it.

2/22/20

South Carolina recruit. 6-foot-4, 205 pounds. One of the top MLB draft prospects in the state. Phipps went 3.0 IP with 0 H allowed in a shortened game. Large frame, slightly closed landing, ¾ slot. Showed lower effort than previous starts. Set tone with FB at 90-93, T94. Slider at 74-77. Slipped out on back-door to RHH, but showed typical sharp action on wipe-out counts to LHH. Did not need to throw off speed much, but showed it. Has been a put-away pitch.

2/14/20

South Carolina recruit. Lean, projectable frame. Fastball ranged from 86-92, sitting mostly 88-91. Slider was 76-77. Had trouble landing it, but it flashes shape and could be an average pitch when his delivery is in order. Showed solid feel for fading changeup at 77. Arm was behind at landing so he routinely missed up and to his arm side.

9/16/19

The large southpaw and South Carolina commit worked with an 86-90 mph fastball, tossing in a soft breaking ball to go with it. Phipps has long been an attraction in the state of Georgia, and will be once again this spring for MLB scouts. If Phipps can answer questions about his overall strike-throwing ability, while firming up his feel to spin, he could see a steady stock rise over the next eight months.
