6/26/19

Bay Area Open OF - Large, physical build with high waist and square shoulders; present strength in the frame and full speed quickly (7.52 60 yd). Wide, balanced stance from left-side with high hands and high back elbow. Calm load with slight foot lift showing balanced transfer of weight while using the back hip to drive through contact. Hands are loose with compact barrel being firm through the zone on slightly upward path; good shoulder tilt with full two-hand finish allowing barrel to lift into the gaps showing carry with flashes of more power coming (87 EV). Shorter stride in OF with quick feet working in time through the baseball. Arm is strong with length out of the glove showing good carry and online throws fitting in corner spot (83 MPH). Two-sport athlete showing the physicality and arm to fit as a LHH corner outfielder.

PBR Bay Area Open - A good build on his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame, Johnson passes the eye test quite easily. There are plenty of things to like about him and also room for improvements that can enhance what he presently brings. Has some moving parts in the delivery in search of rhythm (which I like) though the backside arm action seems to be patterned off Tim Lincecum, which without the elite athleticism of Lincecum causes many prep pitchers to be inconsistent with the timing of their delivery, which is the case with Johnson. Over the rubber, in the wind-up, he often had his plant foot directing him toward the 3rd base line and then as a natural compensation, his front foot frequently lands open in an effort to get back on-line. The arm speed is plenty good, with a fastball (81-83 mph) that flashes near mid-80s and with some mechanical tweaks could very well get to the 83-86 range. Curveball feel is present (69-70 mph) and there was late action. Change-up 74-78 mph is a bit firm off the fastball but the life was quite good and it was down. Both secondary pitches certainly look capable of being usable.

2/12/19

vs Monterey - long and lean with a large frame and projectable athleticism. His arm stood out early as he was playing long toss with ease. He had a great day at the plate where he barreled three balls through the right side and middle of the field moving well out of the box with some athleticism. Johnson has a tall stance from the left side with low hands showing some snap through the zone with the barrel. The arm strength translated well to the mound where his FB sat 74-76 MPH working mainly armside in his very quick inning of work. The arm has some length in the swing with stabby actions down, but is clean to ¾ release and the frame is a good pitchers build with length in the legs showing strength. His CB was 12/6 shaped at 63-65 mph showing through the zone depth and getting weak contact.
