We saw 5 high school backstops make their PBR debut at the 2021 TN Preseason ID on January 2nd at Showtime Sports Academy. Independence's Grant Morgan (2022) established himself as the top catcher of the event after posting a 2.16 pop time then having a barrel-heavy BP round from the left side.  Below, we dive into the events up and coming catchers.

Catcher Reports

Grant Morgan C / OF / Independence , TN / 2022

6-foot, 180-pound left handed hitting backstop. Balanced setup with compact load generating easy bat speed.  Flashes of gap-to-gap power, barreling some balls into the power alleys. Hard line drives using all fields, looking to go pull side. Defensively, decent athlete with good base and dependable hands. Can be more crisp on transfers but short quick arm with solid strength.

Ian Reagan C / RHP / Silverdale Baptist Academy, TN / 2023

The Soph. Silverdale Baptist backstop put together a very solid performance in his first PBR showcase.  Solid frame at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds with room to add on mass. The arm strength really stood out behind the dish, 74 on the gun with good accuracy for 2.07-2.13 pop time. At the dish, sound base with simple load, getting on plane early, with line drive approach. Not a complete product offensive, but qualities that can contribute while solid behind the dish.

Nicolas Kropf C / 3B / Davidson Academy, TN / 2023

Proportionally strong 6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Athletic setup in the box, comfortable balance in the lower half with a slightly open front foot, smooth pre-pitch hand rhythm, strides short to even. Quiet actions defensively, soft hands that receive the baseball with ease, athletic lower half that drives in line to the bag, clean hand transfer to release. Short arm stroke, high ¾ slot.

AJ Langston C / RHP / Rockvale , TN / 2024

Lean, high-waisted 5-foot-10, 140-pound frame. Right-handed hitting backstop. Balanced setup at the plate, bat starts rested on back shoulder, quick toe-tap trigger into a backward hand load. Long bat path with a high two-hand finish through contact. Lower half is balanced behind the plate, upright posture, hands work towards the baseball. Short arm action, ¾ slot.

Whitt Moorman C / 2B / Fred J Page, TN / 2024

5-foot-7, 130-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Athletic build. Lower half is slightly crouched in the box, active pre-pitch hand rhythm, quick toe-tap trigger into a short stride. Short bat path, barrel head stays flat through the zone, steady line drive approach. Defensively, starts tall behind the plate, upright posture at gather, feet work away from target with a recoil finish in the lower half. Arm plays short from a ¾ window.
