Quick Hitters: Team Elite Pitchers

Brandon Hall
Executive Director of Scouting, PBR NC

Prep Baseball Report was at Heritage HS in Wake Forest, NC to host the PBR Scout Day with Team Elite.  Forty-two players ran through the workout.  Position players ran a laser timed 60, followed by an offensive and defensive evaluation.  Pitchers threw controlled bullpens.

PBR scouts were on hand to collect and verify stats as well as capture video on each player.  In the coming week we will dive into the players and numbers posted at the PBR Scout Day.  Today we look at some pitchers who stood out during their bullpen work.

Quick Hitters - Pitchers

Cooper Cavanaugh (LHP, Topsail HS, 2023) – Thin, lanky build, standing 6-foot-3, 170 pounds.  Plenty of room to dream on added strength affecting future stuff.  Fastball sat 76-79, spinning at 1950rpm.  Long arm swing with the elbow working above the shoulder line as he works to his cock and foot-strike position.  On-line.  Average arm speed and over-the-top slot.  Gradual downer breaking ball at 63-67.  Flashed average feel for a change-up.

Sam Lawson (RHP, Sanderson HS, 2023) – Strength present at 6-foot, 205 pounds.  Fastball at 79-82, with a 2100 spin rate.  Coiled at balance, unwinds into an on-line foot-strike.  Long arm swing.  Elbow works above the shoulder line as he works to his cocked phase.  Over-the-top with average to above arm speed.  Fastball is firm with ride through the zone.  Breaking ball has gradual top to bottom action with a slight hump out of the hand at 68 and a spin rate of 2300rpm.  Split change tumbles when down with a 1600rmp spin rate, touching 78.

Nash Rice (LHP, North Raleigh Christian, 2024) – Has a high ceiling.  Stands 6-foot, 166 pounds.  Showed arm speed, arm strength, and the ability to spin the baseball.  Rhythmic delivery builds tempo.  Lands open to his line with a square foot-strike.   Front side can clear early creating some arm side run and arm side misses.  Fastball at 80-83 with a spin rate of 2250.  Above average arm speed from a long arm action and over-the-top slot. Solid arm speed on the breaking ball at 73-75, spinning at 2120rpm.  Inconsistent break that should firm up into depth as the front side stabilizes.

Jacob Williams (RHP, Wakefield HS, 2021) – UNC Asheville commit.  Worked with some ease in this bullpen, showing solid arm speed, but not airing it out.  Advanced secondary stuff that should allow him to have success against most high school bats, and will yield opportunity at the next level.  Fastball was 81-83 on this day.  Hard slider at 72-74.  Late with big sweeping action.  Lacked depth and sat middle to elevated at times.  Should be able to gain depth as he works for extension and a slightly different hand position at release.  Split change-up ranged 72-73 with a 1020rpm spin rate.  Tumbled and cut when down in the zone.
