GA Scout Blog: 2/26

By Blake Davis
Georgia State Director

Rain has dampened much of the early season schedule so far this spring, but it held up long enough for East Paulding and South Cobb to fit in their Tuesday night contest in Austell. PBR Georgia Scouting Director Blake Davis was in attendance for the Raiders' 8-3 win on the road, one in which 2020 uncommitted RHP Eli Studdard pitched the final two frames in relief, slamming the door shut for a victorious East Paulding team that is working its way back to .500 after dropping its last three games, now at 2-3 on the spring. Studdard did not allow a walk or hit and earned strikeouts for four of the six outs he recorded.

As for South Cobb, the Eagles are now 1-2 this season. They're back in action tonight and tomorrow, with games against Douglas County and Lithia Springs, a team in which they beat last week.

Below are detailed scouting reports on three players from last evening's game: South Cobb's OF Brysen Boone (2019) and SS/2B Allen Mateo (2021), as well as East Paulding's LHP Cole McDaniel (2021).

Brysen Boone OF / South Cobb, GA / 2019

Boone has a mature frame with an athletic look. He moves well in the OF and shows a fluid arm stroke that produces on-line carry to the baseball. At the plate Boone sets up with high hands and shows solid bat speed and intent to impact the baseball. His approach is mostly pull-side and would like to see more of an all-fields approach, especially deep in counts. Boone is an athletic outfielder with good actions and tools for the game.

Allen Mateo SS / 2B / South Cobb, GA / 2021

Mateo has a wiry build with long, rangy arms. Defensively Mateo shows good hands and actions at shortstop. He plays under control and with a low pulse. His arm will need to get stronger to stay at the position at the next level, but he has a quick release and a good baseball clock. Offensively, Mateo shows a nice straight away set-up. He has feel for the bat head and appears to want to use the big part of the field. Overall, Mateo has very good actions for the game, but will need to make gains in the strength department over the next few years.

Cole McDaniel LHP / OF / East Paulding, GA / 2021

McDaniel is a long rangy left-hander with some upside. He gets good extension to the plate and throws a ton of strikes. His curveball shows good shape and is used for early called strikes and more late in counts as a chase pitch. His changeup shows some hand speed and comes out of the same tunnel as his fastball when he is right. I'd like to see McDaniel work more with his fastball, but right now he is very getting good results pitching backwards to hitters.
