Florida’s 2016 class looks to be another bumper crop of high-level prospects, many of whom that will factor heavily in next year’s draft. While the majority of the top 2016 prospects are verbally committed in Florida, the state’s best overall prospect – and arguably the No. 1 prospect in the country – RHP/SS Austin Bergner (Windermere Prep HS) has yet to name his school. The highly athletic 6-foot-4, 180-pound right-hander, who was up to 95 mph at Jupiter in October, undoubtedly will have his choice of schools if he makes it to campus.
Bergner, however, is one of the few exceptions. Most of Florida’s top 2016 prospects have pledged their commitments to in-state schools already.
Miami has made a significant dent in Florida’s 2016 class, with commitments from left-handed hitting C Herbert Iser (Miami Killian HS), RHP Anthony Molina (Somerset Academy Charter HS) and RHP/SS Gregory Veliz, to name a few high-profile recruits. In all, the Hurricanes have nine in-state 2016 commitments.
The crown jewel of Florida State’s 2016 class is LHP Cole Ragans (North Florida Christian HS), a 6-foot-4, 185-pounder who is one of the top prospects in the country. SS/RHP Drew Mendoza (Lake Minneola HS), RHP Brandon Reitz (Trinity Catholic HS) and INF Nick Derr (IMG Academy HS) are also top 2016 prospects. Florida State also has nine in-state 2016 commitments.
Not to be outdone, Florida once again has a strong class behind LHP/OF Andrew Baker (Ridge HS), RHP/3B Garrett Milchin (West Orange HS) and left-handed hitting OF Keenan Bell (Episcopal HS), to name a few.
The new coaching staff at South Florida has made significant headway into the state already. Building off a strong 2015 class, head coach Mark Kingston has landed RHP Tobias Myers (Winter Haven HS), RHP Ross Korosec (Winter Springs HS) and C Jordan Santos (Tampa Catholic HS).
Central Florida’s 2016 class is spearheaded by INF Joe Skinner (Bishop Moore HS), LHP Jesus Luzardo (Parkland HS) and INF/RHP Rylan Thomas (Windermere Prep HS).
