PODCAST: SoCal ProCase Recap

ORANGE, CA. - The 2019 MLB Draft completed on June 5th, and on June 8th, it was time to turn our attention to the 2020 class at the SoCal ProCase. A select group of players were chosen to participate in this exclusive event geared toward high level collegiate and draft prospects.

Players were put through a pro-style workout - 60 yard dash, exit velocity testing, BP, defensive workout - before participating in scout ball format game that saw eight pitchers toe the rubber. PBR California scouting staff collected various stats/data during the workout and game which can be found HERE.

In this edition of the SoCal ProCase Spotlight we highlight:

INF Devan Ornelas (Notre Dame HS)

Infielder Devan Ornelas, a TCU Commit, is listed at 5-11, 175-pounds and has a medium athletic frame with present strength. Ornelas, through his medium frame, shows some pop for a player his size with that classic smooth pretty left-handed swing. He is very quiet at the plate, operates from a slightly open set-up and a small toe tap. He is a slick fielding shortstop with proper mechanics and fields the ball on the glove side while funneling the ball smoothly. Ornelas shows a lot of athleticism and versatility, that’s what makes him so appealing at the next level.

Ornelas started the day off with the 60-yard dash where he didn’t disappoint busting out of the gate with a 6.85 laser timed sixty. His time was the second-best time of the day. He has quick feet, medium stride and a is smooth runner. He is a threat on the base paths and uses his speed to his advantage. He has a quick first step out of the box that hits top speed underway. Recorded a home-to-first time of 4.19 seconds. Ornelas then went on the hitting wheel recording an exit velocity of 90 MPH off a tee. He had three solid rounds of BP, spraying the ball around the field and also flashing some power with a couple home-runs. Ornelas has that beautiful left-handed swing, very compact with quick hands. Has a line drive swing and flashes a gap-to-gap approach. Makes loud consistent contact and is very repeatable with his approach. Ornelas has some sneaky power for his size, particularly to the pull side.

Ornelas went out and had a clean round of infield recording an INF velocity of 79 MPH. He displays average arm strength, carries through the ball with consistent mechanics. Ornelas is a smooth fielding infielder with solid footwork who fields from down to up. Has enough to make the play up-the-middle and in the 5-6 hole. Gets good reads off the bat, proper first step and athletic action at shortstop. Gets his body behind the ball and covers a good amount or ground at short. Ornelas shows athletic action, range and fielding ability to stay at Short. Might be more suited on the other side of the bag at second base and has shown the ability to play in the outfield for his high school team, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame.

Ornelas has a medium frame and is an athletic middle infielder who is starting to fill out his frame and looks like he has added some size and strength from the last-time I saw him in May. Ornelas is a versatile defender who can run and has some sneaky over-the-fence power presently. Ornelas will be an interesting player to keep an eye on as we head into the meat of  the summer circuit and heading into his senior season and beyond.
