ProCase 2019 - A Look Back at RHP Joey Soberon

PBR Northern CA Scouting Staff

PODCAST: Northern CA ProCase

The 2019 Northern CA ProCase was held last June 9th at Delta College in Stockton and it featured all but one of the local talents who are in the mix for the upper rounds of the 2020 draft. The MLB draft will be June 10th and include only five rounds.

We've been building the roster for the 2020 ProCase, where the players will again be put through a pro-style workout with various stats/data recorded during the workouts which can be found HERE from 2019, as well as competitive at-bats/sim-game-type action. We will be ready to roll out our new tech partners, TrackMan, Blast Motion, Driveline, and Vizual Edge.

In the likelihood the event cannot be held at Folsom Lake College due to Covid-19 precautions on that campus we have a contingency plan to hold it at Islanders Field in Lathrop on the same date. We also have alternative dates secured later in the summer. We have NOT adjusted the date at this time and are constantly surveying potential necessary changes.

RHP Joey Soberon (Clayton Valley Charter HS) - 6/9/19

2020 RHP Joey Soberon (UC San Diego Commit) listed at 6-foot-1, 195-pounds with a wide and firm build showing strength throughout the frame and the durability to go out and be a regular weekend starter at the next level. Soberon was uncommitted at the time of the event, and went out and pitched like a man on a mission as he attacked the zone and hitters.

NOTE: During his workouts after the season pause, he sent us video of a couple of bullpens, getting the FB up to 92 and one touch of 93. Given the ability to use that power CB, the velo jump is significant and would have put him squarely on the radar of the area scouts this spring.

Soberon's delivery has tempo and rhythm with the hands starting at the waist through small side-step before lifting up to the chin with the high front leg; delivery shows the athletic ability he has and loose hips finishing with intent over the firm front leg that braces the body well. Soberon creates strong drift down the mound starting with his back hip allowing him to stay connected to the rubber for a long time. The arm has some length out of the glove with a clean break keeping the arm tight to the body through the quick swing and getting to it's H-3/4 fluidly; he repeats his delivery well and the arm staying close to the body allows pitches to jump on hitters.

During the event, Soberon went right after hitters working quickly and showing plus tempo on the hill. The FB (87-89 T90 MPH) showed excellent angle showing the ability to put it at hitters knees before going up the ladder. He pounded both sides of the plate and got some ugly swings on the pitch when he got it under barrels. The CHG (80-81 MPH) was late with hard bottom at the plate using it down through the zone to hitters on both sides of the plate; another one that got swing and misses and flashes as an above-average to plus type of pitch. Soberon also has a CB, but was so effective with the FB/CHG combination during his outing he kept the pitch in his back pocket; we saw the pitch during the spring with 11-to-5 shape showing two-level depth and the ability to buckle a hitter.

Soberon has the build and combination of three-pitches to be a workhorse starter at the next level. His commitment and focus seems to be to continue to get better and continue to attack hitters with his stuff. The confidence shows up on the mound and we see some more upside as Soberon develops.

Of course given the Covid-19 pandemic, future event dates/locations could change. If they do, we will alert all registered players and make adjustments to our calendar.
