LATHROP, CALIF. - The Northern California Upperclass ID event took place at Islanders Field at River Islands on the morning of 10/10/20. There were 35 players in attendance, five of whom showcased at the hot corner.

TrackMan and Blast Motion were utilized during their batting practice round to gather data on exit velocity, hand speed, bat speed, rotational acceleration, fly ball %, on plane efficiency, and many other data points.

We are rolling out position reports this week and next. Be on the look out for future reports on middle infielders, as well as reports on the players who took part in the underclass ID event earlier that day.

Here are the reports for the upperclass pitcherscatchersoutfielders, 3rd basemen, and shortstops, as well as underclass pitchers.

Sorted in order of exit velo:

Colby Evans, San Joaquin Memorial (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: 3B
Body: 6-1, 210-pounds. Physical body type, has developed musculature, well-proportioned strength throughout.
Hit: RHH. Tall set, open stance, bat resting over right shoulder, deep in box, long stride as hands/feet separate, fluid actions in the box. Flat path, adjusted to various locations with barrel contact, easy swing that has a powerful finish, ample power potential; equal GB/LD/FB %.
Power: 94 mph exit velocity in live BP via TrackMan.
Arm: RH. 3B - 84 mph. Clean arm action, produces near mid-80s with low effort, repeatable for ability to be consistently on target.
Defense: Range is better than big body/frame might suggest, light feet, calmly and smoothly gloved all the plays, chance to play and develop at 3rd base.
Run: 7.03 runner in the 60.

Cayden Lee, St. Bernard's (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: 1B/3B
Body: 6-0, 225-pounds. Fuller body type, broad dimensions.
Hit: RHH. Engaged early in his legs, balanced, bent knees, hands just off the chest, small toe tap to very minimal stride, small quiet hand load, direct to ball, maintains balance.  Short stroke with power, two hand finish, powerful core, swing tailored for both average and power; 62.5% fly balls, 50% on plane.
Power: 94 mph exit velocity in live BP via TrackMan. Max hand speed 20.4, bat speed max 72.4.
Arm: RH. 3B - 73 mph. Modest raw arm strength that profiles better at 1B.
Defense: Soft hands, reads ball well, limited range but showed ability to make plays in his area and get off accurate throws. Profiles best at 1B.
Run: 7.96 runner in the 60.

Aaron Martinez, Le Grand (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: 3B
Body: 6-0, 185-pounds. Strong body, still with frame that will fill out with muscle, wide back.
Hit: RHH. Bent at knees in open stance, deep in box, creates early barrel tilt, quiet actions, minimal stride and small hand load yet still produces ample bat speed, two hand finish. Flat stroke, good barrel awareness, top hand plays aggressively, rolls outside stride foot in his finish, flat swing with ability to drive the ball; 80% GBs/LDs, 67% on plane.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity in live BP via TrackMan. Max hand speed 21.4, max bat speed 70.1.
Arm: RH. 3B - 77 mph. Arm stroke tailored to get off quick throws which works given the fair raw arm strength, repeatable, accurate.
Defense: Light feet, hands work well enough, plays calm, has played a lot of SS and now transitions to mostly 3B, tools to play at least average D.
Run: 7.31 runner in the 60.

Adam Stothard, Los Altos (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: 3B
Body: 5-11, 165-pounds. Average athletic body type, well-proportioned, frame can hold more size/strength in the future.
Hit: RHH. Up in the box, wide feet, bat resting over shoulder and quite calm pre-pitch, some hip drift and then arm bar creates some length in swing, has balance, calm head, 21.3 max rotational acceleration. Flat swing that stays on plane, uses hips well, somewhat rotational stroke, tools for a line drive contact type hitter; 69% on plane, 77.7% LDs/FBs.
Power: 84 mph exit velocity in live BP via TrackMan. Max hand speed 21.3 (avg 20.21), max bat speed 64.4.
Arm: RH. 3B - 75 mph. Some depth/length in the arm stroke, enough arm to play at least average with a bit quicker release.
Defense: Good angles, sets up feet well, plays the ball calmly with rhythm, solid fundamentals.
Run: 7.25 runner in the 60.

Diego Garcia, Bellarmine College Prep (CA), 2021
Positional Profile: 3B/2B
Body: 5-11, 180-pounds. Rangy frame, broad upper body, should be able to pack on some muscle.
Hit: RHH. Tall early set up, feet slightly open wider than shoulders, relaxed hands, creates aggressive barrel tilt, aggressive stride, quiet load of hands, swing starts easily.  Hands get inside, upward attack angle, swings with intent, short to it, gets into zone early, two hand high finish, chance to develop power as he physically matures; 44.4% LD, 55.6% FB%, 79% on plane.
Power: 78 mph exit velocity in live BP via TrackMan. Max hand speed 20.3, max bat speed 65, 16.9 max rotational acceleration.
Arm: RH. 3B - 78 mph. Clean arm, can snap the throw from a few angles, tends to pat glove before the throw, looks like more raw arm will come with physical maturity.
Defense: Plays angles well, soft hands, technically sound, showed he's been coached to make the play and check the runner, sets up feet well on backhand side, very competent defensive skills.
Run: 7.69 runner in the 60.
